The Organization

Cancer Support Community Central Texas was created in 2011 by four founders who were looking for alternative methods of treatment for cancer patients and their families.  They joined Cancer Support Community to become licensed affiliates in the Central Texas area, and have been working to establish a physical location for their organization.  

“We can help to not only keep people on a psychologically even keel, but to fill the gap when [the doctors] can’t be there,” said CEO and co-founder Tere Holmes.

Cancer Support Community Central Texas’ mission is to create programs designed to give cancer victims the emotional, physical, social and spiritual support needed to cope with the effects of cancer treatment.

Their programs include educational and emotional workshops, expressive arts therapy groups, healthy lifestyle programs such as yoga and guided imagery, and separate support groups for cancer patients and their caregivers.

“We try to do laughter yoga, with a group of local laughter yogis, and then we’ll do a series of programs called, ‘Frankly Speaking about Cancer’,” said Holmes.

Cancer Support Community Central Texas is a non-profit organization and its programs are free to the public. Cancer Support Community Central Texas is one of 50 affiliates of the national Cancer Support Community and is supported by donations and contributions from corporations, private organizations and individuals.
